Imagine swimming two point four miles, biking one hundred
and twelve miles, and running twenty-six point two miles. You
would have to be pretty tough to do that. Triathletes that
participate in the Ironman do it all the time and many are
wearing tights.
Well, not tights exactly. They are compression socks that
can look a little like tights or panty hose. Compression socks,
including the ones made by Sigvaris, are becoming very popular
among runners and tri-athletes. But why are they subjecting
themselves to wearing these tight knee-high socks? It can't be
for the fashion appeal. Just imagine someone running past you
in a Speedo and tight knee high socks. So it must be for the
competitive advantage right? Let's take a look at some of the
reasons athletes have chosen to sport compression socks during
competition and training.
Compression stockings were originally created and prescribed
to individuals with poor circulatory issues. This could range
from pregnant women to elderly men. These socks could provide
pain relieve and help treat varicose veins. The socks are
specifically designed to provide gradual compression up the
leg. They provide very tight pressure at the ankle and
gradually provide less pressure as it rises to the knee. This
compression allows for better blood flow in the legs and helps
push un-oxygenated blood back to the heart. Individuals with
poor blood circulation, combined with the affects of gravity,
can cause blood to back up and create pools in the veins. This
accumulated blood can cause swelling, pain, and varicose veins.
Compression socks can provide the needed circulatory
assistance.
Most athletes will not have circulatory problems, especially
if they are participation in an Ironman competition. So where
is the benefit? When you take part in strenuous activity or
exercise, you make your muscles work. Your muscles need oxygen
to function at peak performance and your body will compensate
as necessary to try and provide this oxygen. Athletes are
always trying to enhance the way that their body works and give
it that extra help, whether it is supplements or compression
socks. The compression socks can provide better oxygenated
blood to the legs and help get the un-oxygenated blood pumped
back out. It is believed that this can help muscles perform
better. It is also believed that the socks provide extra
support, help prevent cramping, and minimize muscle
fatigue.
Wearing compression socks have proven benefits to help those
with circulatory issues and possibly professional triathletes.
